Awwwww Kazuki~~~~~ <3 He's so adorable. I played my Yunoki alone at [livejournal.com profile] dystopian_flux. You don't often see canonmates for La Corda, it being a. Uh. Dating sim and all, basically.

Suikoden is often deft of canon mates as well, given its age and relative obscurity. The player and I have become fairly good friends.

I always wondered why Suikoden didn't gain in popularity like the Tales series did. I mean, playing through Abyss? Reminded me a hell of a lot of Suikoden V, honestly, insofar as quality gameplay and story/character development goes.

The series had this REALLY bad habit of releasing it's games at the same time as other, more famous RPGs

Suikoden - FFVII

Suikoden II - FFIX

Suikoden III - FFX

Suikoden IV - Fell into obscurity because it simply wasn't as deep as the others.

Suikoden V - Didn't have much in the way of major competition, as I recall.

Another thing to consider about Tales was that, before Symphonia, it really was an obscure series. Not many people played Tales of Destinty, Phantasia was only on emulator, and Tales of Eternia (destiny 2 here) was put out towards the end of the Dreamcast's lifetime and sort of faded into obscurity.

Tales of Symphonia was first released on the Nintendo Gamecube, a system STARVED for RPGs. It was an instant hit BECAUSE it filled that massive demand. Many of the games that followed it, such as Baten Kaitos and the Skies of Arcadia re-release, were vastly popular for the same reason. It brought a lot of positive word-of-mouth attention the series didn't use to have.

The series remained highly popular from then on out (Legendia being the exception, but this is usually the case for any game that's a major design deviation from the rest of its series). Suikoden just was never really granted the same oppurtunity. That and they sucked at promotion.

*laughs* I remember snagging II BECAUSE it came out at the same time as FF9, a game I had no interest in and frankly STILL don't like. My father typically got me the Final Fantasy games every year for Christmas and I asked him to snag me that instead. In retrospect, and by peeking on eBay, it's a damn good thing I did.

I know, but given the popularity of Suikoden V -- and it DID do well, as you stated had no real major competition -- I'm surprised it doesn't have more of a fanbase. Most RPGers I meet haven't even heard of the series, but fall in love with it when I shove it down their throats. Or are at least polite enough not to tell me to STFU and GTFO.

I honestly think it boils down to Konami absolutely failing at marketing this series. I mean, come on. Look at how expensive Suikoden II is on the market place. If they released a Greatest Hits version of Suikoden II, that thing would bring in some serious cashflow.

Unfortunately, none of the Suikoden games qualify as a "greatest hit" due to sales. Which is why Konami isn't all that concerned about marketing it.

Ah well. At leas my Sasarai has canonmates in [livejournal.com profile] luceti. But that game is more suiting for characters from a fantasy setting. Tir has so much CHARISMA in Discedo that he doesn't really need canonmates to get interaction.

Incidentally, you should app him at [livejournal.com profile] discedo. I'm not asking on the Kazuki's behalf, and I kind of want it to be a surprised to her. That is, of course, if you consider it.

If I app anyone from La Corda there, I'd honestly probably app Kahoko Hino... which they might also like, as Hihara has a huge canon crush on her. *laughs* They're good friends too.

I actually already stalked the app some. :) Mostly to see where in canon they take their Kazuki from since it could have been ONE OF A MILLION PLACES. Silly dating sim games and their multiple endings.
